I only finish reading books that I find interesting and feel are worth my time. I read this book cover-to-cover. In the first part of the book, the author uses stories to open to us a window into his own life's struggles and victory. The second part of the book seems to be the author sharing the steps he found to help himself break free from his world of addiction. From the author's use of stories to communicate his heart to his introduction of the fascinating world of neural pathways, to his practical and helpful "3-3-3 You are Free" discipline, this book has a bit of everything you look for in a good read.
Whether you or someone you love is fighting an addiction or battling deep-seated, destructive thought patterns, this is a book that should not only be read, but its instruction and practical advice followed. I do question the author's hermeneutics on p. 37 and find his conclusion on the destination of the unrighteous to be incongruent with his otherwise high view of God and Scriptures. If you too disagree with his conclusion, do not be distracted. The author has done a masterful job of saturating his instruction with Scriptures and providing practical life application steps that if taken serious, will transform your thoughts and your life. Do not overlook the excellent appendix and Index in the back of the book.
I love to request free books to review. In fact I subscribe to two review sites Book Crash, which is where I found Insider Thought Trading, and Book Rooster.
The Good...
I enjoyed the stories. As I've said in previous reviews, it takes a lot to make me cry over a character in a book or movie, but this one had several stories that had me rooting for the character to make a commitment to change and stick with it.
The confusing...
The stories were good, but about half-way through they disappeared. It became what I can only describe as a regular self-help book. In fact, I had to skip ahead and then backtrack just to be sure I was reading the same book. It wasn't as if there was a clear break between the formats. The parable-like teaching began as if the character was reading from another book and then it just became that book. It was very confusing.

In the end, I skipped most of it just to read the stories because I got more out of them. If you're looking for a straightforward book on how to change your thought processes so you can live a happier life, keep looking.
However, if you like a good story and you don't mind wading through some confusing text to get to the self-help guide, then you might enjoy Insider Thought Trading by James Bars.
