RAThe Book The Recording Architecture Book of Studio Design Roger D'Arcy Hugh Flynn Neil Waving 9781907759161 Books Reviews
RA The Book is a book of very high quality. The prints are fantastic and it is a very large book so it really shines as a coffee table book to show to others with the same interest.
This book is a great source of inspiration, and it has a huge number of case studies. This is obviously the main focus of this book and in this regard it really delivers.
Now a little information on what this book does not do. It is not the ultimate studio design book, period.
People how say it is, has obviously not read books like "Recording Studio Design" by Philip Newell.
RA The Book is about 340 pages long and only chapter 6 is really about studio design techniques that are universal and can be applied to any given project. This is 68 pages out of 340.
"Recording Studio Design" by Philip Newell has 830 pages, and every single page debates something that can be of use for a generic project (not a completely fair comparison, since RAs page size is huge).
In RA The Book there are a lot of drawings with rather small notes that are not always very obvious. The drawings and pictures are usually presented without any discussion or explanation to why certain methods where used, so it is hard to know if these methods would apply to a given project or not. Since RA has worked on perfecting their method over the years, as oppose to trying a hundred different approaches to solve a problem, the showcases are rather similar. To give an example there are quite a few very successful studios around the world without one single sheet of plywood with round holes in it; you will not find any of these studios in this book.
I have not found a single measurement stated in this book. When describing a case study I would expect subjective evaluation as well as objective measurements to be present. But I have not found any mentioning of actual levels of sound reduction (STC for example) between different rooms, frequency response and waterfall plots from the monitoring position, how much diffusion our absorption a specific panel gives etc. Neither is there any real discussion about qualities of different live rooms. What are they used for? Why was a specific approach chosen? What reverberation time was the design aim? The same goes for control rooms where the principles are not mentioned. There is quite a big difference if a "Live end, Dead end" or a "Non Environment" approach is chosen, but this is not specified in the case studies.
I am very happy with this book. It is a great help to get people that are not so technically minded interested in studio design and it is a great inspiration. This for me compensates for the fact that it maybe does not cover the whole process of studio design.
I will not really mention the price more than to say that I have paid more for two or three blow ups of photos to the size of the pictures in this book, so for me you definitely get your moneys worth.
Bottom line
If you want a fantastic picture book, and a great source of inspiration, you should definitely buy this book.
If you want to know all the ins and outs regarding studio design and how to apply that knowledge to a new project, then my recommendation is "Recording Studio Design" by Philip Newell.
I also want to make a small reservation for the fact that I have not yet read the entire book (I am about 70% through).
I build acoustically correct rooms for folks. These rooms look like really well done jobs. And they are beautiful. wow.
