This book pulls no punches - pun intended. We are catapulted into the world of woman's wrestling. The lead character, Leilana, is from Hawaii, and her choice of profession comes with her family's involvement in the sport. But there is also a long standing feud with another formidable wrestling family, which has ended in tragedy and disability for both her father and grandfather, who love her and don't want her to be hurt. Therefore, Leilana has to go against their wishes to proceed with her career.
Leilana's ancestry is Hawaiian and Japanese, and one of the most sensitive parts of the novel is the depiction of her personality. Since I lived in Hawaii I thought it was spot-on. Love of family. Respect of elders. A tradition of hard work.
No punches pulled in the fight scenes. They are graphic and brutish. The Dirty One is a wonderful female character who basks in the glory of being booed by the crowds who come to see her fight.
There is a nice ending to the novel and poetic justice for Leilana's family.

The Opening Bell J B Garner 9781364962913 Books Reviews
When I began reading The Opening Bell by J.B. Garner, my images of wrestling came from two very different sources, one spectacle and one sport. Decades ago, wrestling matches on TV were spectacles showing overweight men throwing each other all over the ring in ways that appeared scripted and clownish. In last year’s movie Foxcatcher, wrestling was a serious sport involving strength, speed, and agility.
Garner’s portrayal of the sport is a third look, and probably accurate given the obvious depth of his research. His depiction is similar to Ultimate Fighting, in that the objective appears to be to injure the opponent, a goal easily attained because the sport does not appear to have any rules. The referee rarely appears in the match scenes, except to count to three when a fighter is pressed to the mat. The women combatants attack each other with head butts, fists, elbows, knees, feet, and pulling hair. The wrestling fans scream like bloodthirsty Romans watching gladiators. I would not encourage my daughters to become wrestlers!
Despite this brutal setting, I enjoyed this novel for many reasons. Garner is a gifted writer. His prose is well-crafted and flowing, grabbing a reader page after page. Unlike many lesser-known writers, his story is free from spelling and grammar errors. He even manages to avoid ambiguous pronouns that confuse the reader about who is doing what to whom. The plot, involving a family blood feud that began in the wrestling world many decades ago, is quite believable. It greatly heightens the tension because it means the current combatants must win not only for themselves, but also for their respective family members.
Garner’s characters are the high point of his writing, deeply fleshed out and clearly distinguished. Some are good, some are evil, but you get a sense of how each turned out that way. Some look good at first and then you find they aren’t after all – and vice versa. Authors must give their characters enough personality to make the reader care what happens to them, and Garner does that quite well. All throughout The Opening Bell, I cheered for the heroes and hoped the villains would lose in the end.
J.B. Garner has finally done what so many tried and either fell short or failed. He wrote, in my opinion one of the best in wrestling fiction. And better yet, a story involving pro women's wrestling. Characters you care about, well developed with an exciting story and seemingly half the book dedicated to describing graphic wrestling action. Two families hell bent on continuing a generational feud, Rookie Leilani Ito is the pawn in a power struggle between her family, the Ito' s and the power hungry Von Richters. Fighting her family's support and indifference to her pursuing this dangerous struggle is but one fight she faces. Jealous wrestlers, fellow rookies and seasoned pros see her as a threat determined to test her mettle. Friendship, rivalries and betrayal all test her resolve. But her biggest fight comes with the granddaughter of the rival family, the Von Richters who is willing to put her out of wrestling just like her father and grandfather even if it's a fight to the death. Very exciting we'll written action makes this a page turner with an obvious sequel. Which I can't wait for.
